Michael J. Fox rose to fame in the 1980s after appearing as Alex P. Keaton in the famous sitcom Family Ties.
However, what the audience of that show could not have imagined at that particular moment was the astounding of the Canadian-born actor’s achievements.
Definitely, for the last forty years since the premiere of Family Ties, Fox appeared in a greater number of onscreen credits along with performing self-acting in various works and a few out of them, one certainly, included in the Hall of Fame of cinematography.
Furthermore, Fox has been an amazing activist as well. He founded the Michael J. Fox Foundation in 2000, owing to his own struggle with Parkinson’s disease. The non-profit organization is dedicated to supporting research activities and discovering a treatment for the condition. He has campaigned for the disease on numerous occasions and has made it to the list of the most famous people in the battle against this disease.
As of now, the Michael J. Fox Foundation has secured and spent an astonishing $2 billion for a research program aimed at the treatment and eventual curing of Parkinson’s disease. Ever so resilient with the need to change the world and never let a dreadful disease conquer him, the actor has created a legacy which beats his great achievements in the film and television industries.
Holaquiz has created a list of his best-featured films. Let’s begin!
1. Back to the Future (1985)
One film which has become an iconic symbol of the cinema of the ‘80s is Back to the Future, co-written and directed by Robert Zemeckis, which tells the story of time travelling in a teenage context.
The main character is Marty McFly (Fox), an American high school student, who hops in a time machine built by an eccentric scientist, called Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd), only to travel thirty years into the past and his own parents in their youth.
However, while he is stranded in the past, Marty attempts to use his knowledge of the future to return home — well, he attempts with some help from his future mentor and ’30 years place’ friend Doc Brown.
The film was a success and grossed just over 380 million dollars around the world, with a cast that also included Lea Thompson, Crispin Glover, Thomas F. Wilson, Claudia Wells, and James Tolkan.
The film was a sequel to the first part of the film and it was based on 1989’s Back to the Future Part II which is entertaining and even more thrilling than the original as Marty is transported from 2015 to an alternate ‘85 and then to ’55. In part three of the saga, make it a western as Marty and the Doc! In this case, 1885 is the setting which has them riding horses in the Wild West.
Back to the Future is a great cinematic experience, extremely humorous, and engaging, and brings an attitude of warmth and goodwill. The narrative is gripping, the actors’ performances are terrific, the cut is breathtaking, and the soundtrack is beautiful.
The film earned four nominations for an Academy Award including Best Original Screenplay, Best Sound, Best Sound Effects Editing, and Best Original Song for ‘The Power of Love’. Back to the Future went on to win the Oscar for Achievement in Best Sound Effects Editing.
2. Teen Wolf (1985)
Like Back to the Future, which was released in the same year as this one, this film too is about a supernatural adventure and a teenage comedy that made Fox the kind of movie star whose presence in the film was an asset. Fox stars in this Rod Daniel-directed mess, Scott Howard; a teenager who discovers he is a werewolf and everything changes.
The instant success of the film led to the production of a spin-off Teen Wolf animated series, and even a sequel in 1987 that did not feature Fox. In what has been termed nearly 30 years after Teen Wolf was first released in theaters: the live-action television series of the same name was aired on MTV in 2011.
3. Casualties of War (1989)
This war drama directed by Brian De Palma features Fox as a Vietnam soldier who is drafted into a squad that uses psychological warfare tactics which are more advanced than he would prefer.
When some of his fellow soldiers led by Sergeant Tony Meserve (Sean Penn) decide to assault and abuse a Vietnamese girl, Max Eriksson (Fox) has to make a lethal move in self-defence.
Based on a true story that is quite shocking and disturbing, Casualties of War depicts a grim and harrowing war. Fox’s role in the movie only served to reinforce the perception that he is now capable of playing a far wider range of characters that are darker than the roles he was known for.
4. The American President (1995)
The screenplay was produced by Sorkin and the film was directed by Rob Reiner. It is about a struggling single President Michael Douglas who decides to take a step forward and starts dating an environmental activist Annette Bening.
Michael Fox acts in the movie as Lewis Rothschild who helps Douglas’ President get over his love dilemmas. The film was nominated for an Oscar Award for Best Original Musical or Comedy Score.

As for Fox, he provides a notable performance as vain reporter Jason Stone. He was Ward’s reporter who was very excited and wanted to get the most out of the alien invasion.
